Make sure you have completed your Cornell Notes on Chavez’s speech to the Commonwealth Club.

Honor students should completed research on Chavez Speech.
All students should be conducting basic research on Latino Empowerment.

Definition of Empowerment:

To give power to (someone)
To give official authority or legal power to (someone)

Examples:
·       Gloria Allred seeks changes in the workplace that will empower women.
·      Congress has empowered state legislatures to set educational standards.
·      Her attorney was empowered on her behalf.
·      Students at Hollywood High are empowered to help themselves succeed by good time management, creation of study groups, and access to tutoring.


Remember the Driving Question is:
Agree or Disagree with Cesar Chavez’s claim that organization results in empowerment.  Resources for further research are in the 10th grade honors box.

Seminar will be graded based upon participation and following Seminar Rules the first time.  Late students will be penalized unless they have a legitimate written excuse.

Review above sections with your teams

Then continue with sections on Emotional Appeals, Ethical Appeals, and Loaded Works.

Remember to identify all of the words that have strong emotional connotations and give an explanation of the associated emotions.  Remember to explain why someone is an authority and is therefore used as an ethical appeal.

 Do not forget to explain what is being compared to what in your identification of comparisons (similes, metaphors, analogies).

Based on your analysis and research, create a Roman Numeral Outline of a 1000-word paper where you agree or disagree with Chavez’s claim that organization results in empowerment.

Instructions for creating an outline are to be found in the 10th Grade Chavez folder.

What evidence do you need to prove whether his claim is true or false?  Think about what determines empowerment.

Be prepared to discuss in class on Monday.
