Vocabulary activities will be a xeroxed handout. Gist questions should be downloaded from the Brave New World Box on the main page of the blog.
You will be reading a book about the future--one author's view of what people and the world may be like in the future. Part of the author's vision is that people will become numb to the ugly realities of life through the use of a drug called "soma" and through other "recreational" drugs. The novel also poses the questions:
Are all humans guaranteed certain "inalienable rights'? Who governs the government?
The class will examine the idea of the " consent of the governed which refers to the idea that a government's legitimacy and moral right to use state power is only justified and legal when derived from the people or society over which that political power is exercised".
In relation to this idea from the book, Orwell's Animal Farm, and 1984 students will have a class project in which they will create and implement a social media campaign on topics that will be announced at a later date.
